We present a parallel implementation of the Karatsuba method for multiplication of multiprecision integers and its usage for integer division with remainder and for bidirectional exact division. Both the sequential and the parallel version exhibit significant speed-up over the currently used methods for exact arithmetic in scientific computing. The practical experiments use the SGI Origin shared memory architecture with 20 processors, and show an acceptable efficiency (70\% to 80\%). =postscript= none =sponsor= Partially supported by project ``Intelligent Environment for Scientific Computing'' -- grant nr. 12623/98 from World Bank and the Romanian Government, and from the Socrates programme. =howpublished= Presented at Algoritmy 2000, Tatra Mountains, Slovakia, September 2000.
