This is best portrayed by today's computer graphics systems. Naturally computer graphics researchers have always striven to get most realistic images of real life objects. In 1974, Catmull showed how texture mapping can add reality to computer generated images using texture mapping technique, and since then it is a field of interest for several researchers. In this paper, we give a brief introduction of {\it texture mapping} concept and its main methods. We describe some of its recently developed methods and also some of the main applications where it is useful. We also discuss popular software used for rendering of images of the real life objects on computer. =sponsor= . =keywords= texture mapping =end=
